Konstantin Grcic was born in Munich in 1965. After studying at Parnham College in England, he studied design at the Royal College of Art, London, from 1988 to 1990.

In 1991 he opened a studio in Munich and started working as an industrial designer and architect. He designed furniture for some of the leading European manufacturers, such as Agape, Magis, Moormann, Moroso, Muji, Whirlpool, etc.

He is currently working with Herzog & de Meuron on the new Parrish Art Museum on Long Island, NY.

Konstantin Grcic's designs are unfussy, minimalist. What distances him from minimalism, however, is his work on the concept of functionality in human terms through a combination of extreme design rigour with a remarkably sharp mind and a great sense of humour. Grcic likes to describe his design aesthetic as "simple".

He has won many prestigious awards: in 2000 he was guest of honour at the Interieur Biennal of Kortrijk, Belgium; he was named Designer of the Year by Architektur & Wohnen, Cologne; and Designer de l'Année at Maison Objet, Paris.

Another of his designs, the Mayday lamp manufactured by Flos, was selected for the permanent collection of MOMA, New York. Mayday also won the Compasso d'Oro award in 2001.
